CranioSacral Therapy in Cascais & Estoril for English Speakers
If you are looking for CranioSacral Therapy in Cascais or Estoril, I offer one-to-one sessions in English from my practice at HUMA in Estoril.
People find their way to CranioSacral Therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a physical reason, such as persistent tension, headaches, jaw discomfort or pain that keeps returning. Other times, it is less easy to pinpoint. You might feel constantly switched on, emotionally overwhelmed, exhausted but unable to properly rest, or simply disconnected from your body.
For me, CranioSacral Therapy offers something we often have very little of in everyday life: the opportunity to slow down and listen.
My approach brings together CranioSacral Therapy with my wider understanding of the nervous system, fascia, somatic psychology and emotional wellbeing. Rather than looking at the body and mind as separate, I am interested in how our physical sensations, emotions, experiences and nervous system continually influence one another.
Restoring Balance & Regulating Your Nervous System in Portugal
CranioSacral Therapy, often shortened to CST, is a light-touch form of bodywork that developed from osteopathic practice. It traditionally works with the craniosacral system, including the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, but the work is not limited to the head or spine.
An important part of CST is also the fascia, the continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects muscles, bones, organs, nerves and other structures throughout the body. Because fascia forms an interconnected system, tension or restriction in one area can influence how movement and strain are experienced elsewhere.
During a session, I use light contact at different areas of the body, which may include the head, spine, sacrum, feet and areas where patterns of tension or restriction are present. Through this contact, I pay attention to subtle changes in the tissues, fascia, movement and stillness.
Rather than manipulating the body or trying to force a release, the work gives the tissues and nervous system time to respond at their own pace.
One of the things that drew me to CranioSacral Therapy is precisely this relationship between the physical body, fascia and nervous system. Our bodies are not made up of isolated parts, and our physical and emotional experiences do not necessarily exist in isolation either.
The nervous system is constantly taking in information and responding to what is happening around and within us. Stress at work, physical pain, relationships, lack of sleep, difficult experiences and emotions can all influence how we feel in our bodies.
Ideally, we are able to move relatively easily between periods of activity and rest. But sometimes the system can become stuck in patterns of prolonged activation or shutdown.
You might recognise this as feeling constantly alert, finding it difficult to switch your mind off, holding tension without realising it, feeling exhausted despite resting, becoming easily overwhelmed, or struggling to feel fully present in your body.
This does not mean that every symptom is caused by the nervous system. The body is far more complex than that. But our physical and emotional experiences are deeply connected, and sometimes slowing things down gives us an opportunity to notice those connections.
As the body settles during a CranioSacral Therapy session, many people experience a sense of deep rest. Others become more aware of sensations or areas of tension that they had stopped noticing.
There is no particular state you need to reach. Part of the process is simply becoming curious about what your body is communicating.

What Can CranioSacral Therapy Support?
People seek CranioSacral Therapy for a wide range of physical and emotional reasons.
Some come because they are living with ongoing tension or discomfort. Others are looking for support during periods of stress, burnout, emotional overwhelm or change. Sometimes people have already tried several approaches and are curious about working with their body in a different way.
In my practice, some of the areas people commonly seek support with include:
Jaw tension and TMJ discomfort. Stress, concentration and habitual patterns can all contribute to tension around the jaw, face and neck. Some people are not even aware of how much they clench until they begin to pay closer attention to their body.
Because the fascia is interconnected, I am also interested in patterns beyond the exact place where discomfort is being experienced. The jaw does not exist separately from the rest of the head, neck and body.
You can read more specifically about CranioSacral Therapy for TMJ and jaw pain here.
Headaches and migraines. People living with recurring headaches or migraines sometimes explore CranioSacral Therapy alongside their existing medical care, particularly when they also experience tension around the neck, shoulders, jaw or head.
Stress and burnout. Long periods of pressure can affect far more than our thoughts. Stress can show up through muscle tension, disrupted sleep, fatigue, irritability or the feeling that you simply cannot switch off.
Trauma and emotional overwhelm. Difficult experiences can influence the way we respond to the world long after an event itself has passed. Sometimes we understand something completely at a conscious level while our body continues to react automatically.
That last piece is particularly important to the way I work.
Before training in CranioSacral Therapy, I spent years working with emotions, beliefs and subconscious patterns through EFT and Matrix Reimprinting. One thing I saw repeatedly was that intellectually understanding a pattern does not necessarily mean that the body has stopped responding to it.
You can know that you are safe and still feel yourself brace.
You can understand where a fear comes from and still feel the physical reaction.
You can have talked about an experience many times and still notice your body tightening when something reminds you of it.
Body-centred work gives us another way of approaching these patterns. Not by forcing the body to let something go, but by noticing what is there and creating enough space to respond differently.
CranioSacral Therapy is not a replacement for appropriate medical care, particularly where symptoms require diagnosis or medical treatment. I see it as something that can sit alongside conventional healthcare, offering another way to explore the relationship between the body, fascia, nervous system and our lived experience.
What to Expect During Your Session in Cascais
Your CranioSacral Therapy session takes place at HUMA in Estoril, close to Cascais.
We begin by talking about what has brought you in. You may have a specific physical concern, be experiencing a period of stress or emotional difficulty, or simply feel curious about CranioSacral Therapy.
You do not need to know exactly what you want to work on.
After our initial conversation, you will lie comfortably on the treatment table, fully clothed. I use light touch at different areas of the body and may stay in one position for some time before moving elsewhere.
From the outside, a session can sometimes look surprisingly still. But that does not mean that every session is silent or purely about relaxation.
As the nervous system settles and the body begins to soften, you may notice warmth, tingling, changes in your breathing, a sense of heaviness or lightness, subtle movement, or shifts in areas of tension. You may become more aware of sensations within the fascia or notice that something which initially felt tight begins to change.
Some people enter a deeply relaxed, theta-like state, similar to the space between waking and sleep. As the conscious mind becomes quieter, emotions, memories, images or unexpected thoughts can sometimes come into awareness.
If emotions or memories arise, there can absolutely be conversation.
You may want to talk about what you are noticing, make sense of an emotion, or explore the connection between a physical sensation and something that has come into your awareness. If it feels helpful, I can support you in staying with that experience and allowing it to move or release rather than simply observing it in silence.
My background in EFT, Matrix Reimprinting and somatic work naturally informs this part of my practice. It means that when emotional material arises during bodywork, I am comfortable working with both the physical and emotional experience rather than feeling that we have to choose one or the other.
At other times, very little talking is needed. You may simply want to remain quiet and allow your body to rest.
There is no fixed formula. Some sessions are predominantly physical and deeply restful. Others become more emotional or conversational. Often there is a mixture of both.
The important thing is that we follow what is actually happening for you rather than trying to create a particular kind of experience.

Why Choose an English-Speaking Practitioner?
Finding the right therapist is about more than qualifications. You also need to feel that you can communicate naturally and be understood.
This can become particularly important when you live outside your home country.
I know that experience personally. I have lived and worked internationally for much of my adult life, and Portugal is now my home. I am Dutch and Colombian, studied and trained in the UK, and have worked with people from many different cultures and backgrounds.
My sessions are primarily offered in English. I also speak Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese, which can be helpful for clients who naturally move between languages, even when English remains the main language of our sessions.
For the large international community living around Cascais and Estoril, having therapy in a language in which you feel comfortable can make it easier to describe subtle experiences, ask questions and express something emotional without having to search for the right words.
My own background also influences the way I practise.
I began my career in education before spending years working in the corporate world. Alongside this, I trained across Yoga, Meditation, EFT, Matrix Reimprinting, Energy Work and eventually CranioSacral Therapy.
I value critical thinking and evidence-informed practice, while remaining curious about the parts of human experience that are not always easily explained.
Most importantly, I do not see my role as fixing you or telling you what your body means.
I see it as listening with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CranioSacral Therapy safe?
CranioSacral Therapy uses very light touch and is generally considered a low-intensity form of bodywork. However, your individual health circumstances always matter. If you have a recent serious injury, acute medical condition, recent surgery or anything you are unsure about, please let me know before your session. Where appropriate, I may suggest checking with your doctor first.
What should I wear?
You remain fully clothed throughout the session, so simply wear something comfortable that you can relax in. There is no need for special clothing. Soft, loose-fitting clothes are ideal if possible.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number.
Some people notice something meaningful after their first session and simply want to experience CranioSacral Therapy occasionally. Others find that regular sessions are helpful for a period of time.
I prefer not to prescribe a number of sessions before we know how you respond. We can talk about what you are noticing as we go and decide together what feels useful, without pressure to commit to a package or treatment plan.
Do I need to have a specific problem?
Not at all.
Some people come with a very clear reason for booking. Others simply know they have been under a lot of pressure, feel disconnected from themselves or want to give their body space to rest.
You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a perfectly formed explanation.
