CranioSacral Therapy in Lisbon for English Speakers

If you are looking for an English-speaking CranioSacral therapist in Lisbon, my practice is based at HUMA in Estoril, around 30 minutes from central Lisbon and easily accessible from Cascais and the surrounding area.

Living abroad can make finding the right practitioner surprisingly difficult. You may find the type of therapy you are looking for, but not feel confident discussing something physical or emotional in Portuguese. Or perhaps you are looking for an approach that considers more than the symptom itself.

I offer one-to-one CranioSacral Therapy sessions with a particular interest in the relationship between the nervous system, fascia, physical tension and our emotional experiences.

People come to me for different reasons. Some are experiencing persistent physical discomfort or tension. Others feel stressed, burnt out or constantly switched on. And sometimes there is no single problem to solve. There is simply a sense of not feeling quite at home in your body anymore.

CranioSacral Therapy gives us time to listen to what may be happening underneath that.

CranioSacral Therapy for Nervous System Regulation & Stress

CranioSacral Therapy, often shortened to CST, is a light-touch form of bodywork that developed from osteopathic practice.

Traditionally, CST works with the craniosacral system, including the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. My work also pays close attention to the fascia and nervous system.

Fascia is the continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects structures throughout the body, including muscles, bones, nerves and organs. Rather than existing as separate pieces, this tissue forms an interconnected network throughout us.

This is one of the reasons I do not think of the body as a collection of isolated parts.

The place where you feel tension is not necessarily the only place worth paying attention to.

During a session, I use light contact at different areas of the body and listen through my hands to subtle patterns of tension, movement and stillness. I am not trying to manipulate the body into a particular position or force a release.

Instead, we give the tissues and nervous system time to respond.

The nervous system is continually responding to what is happening both inside and around us. Work pressure, relationships, physical pain, lack of sleep, difficult experiences and prolonged stress can all influence the way we feel in our bodies.

Sometimes we become so accustomed to being tense, alert or busy that we no longer recognise it as activation. It simply feels normal.

Creating space for the body to slow down can make those patterns easier to notice.

Why People Seek CranioSacral Therapy

There is no single reason to come for CranioSacral Therapy.

Some people are drawn to it because of physical symptoms such as persistent tension, headaches, migraines, neck discomfort or jaw clenching. Others are looking for support with stress, burnout, emotional overwhelm or difficulty relaxing.

I am more interested in the person who arrives than in fitting them into a category.

For example, two people may both come with jaw tension, but their experiences may be completely different.

One may clench their jaw while concentrating at work. Another may notice it when they feel anxious. Someone else may have a diagnosed TMJ disorder and be exploring bodywork alongside their medical care.

This is where working with the whole body becomes interesting.

Jaw tension does not necessarily exist in isolation from the neck, head, shoulders, breathing patterns or surrounding fascia. Rather than focusing only on the exact point where discomfort is felt, CST allows us to pay attention to wider patterns of tension and restriction.

If jaw tension is your main concern, you can read more about CranioSacral Therapy for TMJ and jaw pain.

The same applies to stress and burnout.

Stress is not only something we experience in our thoughts. You might notice yourself holding your shoulders up, breathing differently, clenching your jaw, struggling to sleep, feeling restless or finding it difficult to properly switch off.

Sometimes the body tells us we are overwhelmed before we consciously recognise it ourselves.

I explore this in more depth in CranioSacral Therapy for stress relief and burnout recovery.

The Role of Fascia, the Nervous System & the Body

Fascia is particularly interesting to me because it challenges the idea that the body can always be understood one part at a time.

It forms a continuous network of connective tissue throughout the body, surrounding and connecting muscles, bones, nerves, organs and other structures. It is responsive and adaptable, changing in relation to movement, posture, injury, physical strain and prolonged patterns of tension.

In bodywork, we also sometimes see something more surprising. As an area of fascial tension begins to release, an emotional response can arise with it. Someone may suddenly feel sadness, begin to cry, experience an image or have a memory come into awareness, sometimes without having consciously been thinking about that experience at all.

This is sometimes described as the body or tissues “holding memory.” It does not necessarily mean that fascia stores a memory in the same way that the brain does. Rather, our experiences involve the whole body. The nervous system, muscular patterns, breathing, posture and connective tissues can all adapt around what we repeatedly experience.

Sometimes, when a long-held physical pattern begins to change, something connected to that experience seems to surface too.

This is one of the aspects of CranioSacral Therapy that fascinates me most.

A session may begin with what feels like a purely physical area of tension and remain entirely physical. At another time, working with an area of restriction may unexpectedly bring emotion or a memory into awareness.

If that happens, we do not need to shut it down or treat it as separate from the bodywork. We can slow down, talk about what is coming up if you want to, and give both the physical and emotional response space to unfold.

My background in EFT, Matrix Reimprinting, somatic and energy work naturally informs how I support these moments. I am comfortable moving between hands-on work and conversation when that is where the session leads.

At the same time, I do not assume that every area of tension has a hidden emotional meaning. Sometimes physical tension is physical tension. The point is not to go searching for a memory, but to be open to what emerges when the body begins to let go.

What to Expect During a CranioSacral Therapy Session

Your session begins with a conversation.

We talk about what has brought you in, what you have been experiencing and anything that feels relevant. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on.

You then lie comfortably on the treatment table, fully clothed. I use light touch at different areas of the body, which may include the head, spine, sacrum, feet or other areas where I am noticing patterns of tension or restriction.

A session may look very still from the outside.

Internally, your experience can be quite different.

You may notice warmth, tingling, changes in breathing, subtle movement, heaviness, lightness or changes in an area that initially felt tense. You may become aware of sensations within the fascia or notice tension beginning to shift.

Some people enter a deeply relaxed, theta-like state, similar to the space between waking and sleep. As the conscious mind becomes quieter, thoughts, images, emotions or memories can sometimes come into awareness.

And this is where my sessions are not necessarily silent.

If something emotional arises and you want to talk, we can talk.

You may want to describe what you are feeling, explore why a particular memory has appeared or simply put words to a sensation. If it feels useful, I can support you in staying connected to what is happening in your body while we explore it together.

My background in EFT, Matrix Reimprinting, somatic and energy work means that I am comfortable when a physical session naturally becomes emotional or conversational. We can work with what is arising rather than feeling that it has interrupted the bodywork.

Equally, nothing needs to be discussed.

There are sessions where very little is said because that is what the person needs. There are others where bodywork and conversation move naturally back and forth.

Neither is more successful than the other. The important thing is that we follow what is actually happening for you rather than trying to create a particular kind of experience.

Finding an English-Speaking CranioSacral Therapist in Lisbon

For many international people living in Portugal, language matters when choosing a therapist.

You may be perfectly comfortable ordering dinner or dealing with everyday life in Portuguese, but explaining an unusual physical sensation or talking about something emotional is different.

I understand that personally.

I am Dutch and Colombian, studied and trained in the UK, and have lived and worked internationally for much of my adult life. Portugal is now my home.

My sessions are primarily offered in English. I also speak Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese, which can be useful for clients who naturally move between languages, even when English remains the main language of our sessions.

My professional background has also crossed very different environments.

I began my career in education before spending years working in the corporate world. Alongside this, I trained in yoga and meditation, EFT, Matrix Reimprinting, energy work and CranioSacral Therapy, while continuing to study the nervous system, somatic psychology and related approaches.

That combination has shaped the practitioner I have become.

I value critical thinking and evidence-informed practice, but I am also curious. I do not believe that my job is to decide what your experience means or position myself as the person with all the answers.

My role is to listen with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CranioSacral Therapy safe?

CranioSacral Therapy uses very light touch and is generally considered a low-intensity form of bodywork. However, your individual health circumstances always matter.

If you have a recent serious injury, acute medical condition, recent surgery or anything you are unsure about, please let me know before your session. Where appropriate, I may suggest checking with your doctor first.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

No. My sessions are primarily offered in English.

I also speak Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese, so if you naturally move between languages, that is completely fine. English simply remains the main language of my practice.

What should I wear?

You remain fully clothed throughout your session. Wear something comfortable that allows you to relax. You do not need to bring any specialist clothing or equipment.

How many CranioSacral Therapy sessions will I need?

There is no predetermined number.

Some people come once because they are curious. Others notice that they would like to continue working with something and choose to come more regularly for a period of time.

I prefer to see how you actually respond before discussing whether another session might be useful. There is no requirement to commit to a particular number of appointments.

Is CranioSacral Therapy the same as osteopathy?

No, although CranioSacral Therapy has its roots in osteopathic practice.

There are similarities in the attention given to the body and its interconnected structures, but the training, techniques and scope of practice are different.
